Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu, often called the Ninja’s art, is in fact a collection of nine schools of martial arts gathered under the guidance of one man, Soke Masaaki Hatsumi. Through his Bujinkan organization Soke Hatsumi spreads the word of peace through understanding of the martial arts and the role they play in the lives of the practitioners of the Bujinkan arts and those affected by them. Soke Hatsumi reaches out across the world through his books and DVD’s and, formerly, through the Taikai’s (seminars) held in various countries each year.
Through the training of thousands of individuals in dozens of countries, law enforcement agencies, military personnel and close protection groups Soke Hatsumi has influenced the development of training systems that have saved dozens of lives and has influenced the teaching of techniques that are used in police forces across the world today.
Born in 1931 Hatsumi Masaaki studied many different martial arts but finally found his ‘life’s mentor’ when he met Takamatsu Toshitsugu and studied under him for fifteen years, finally inheriting the title of Soke or Grand-master of the Togakure Ryu Ninjutsu school. With this title came the Grand-master ship of eight other Ryu of both Chinese and Japanese origin which he unified into the Bujinkan system.
Soke Hatsumi has traveled the world teaching thousands of students and numerous law enforcement agencies He has received many accolades and awards for his work from politicians, spiritual leaders and the heads of such notable organizations as the FBI.
As well as teaching the martial arts through his Bujinkan network Soke Hatsumi has also made time to work as a professional osteopath, a television actor in a popular Japanese television series and has written many books on the martial arts. For many years he was also the Chairman of the International Department of the Japan Literary Artists Club.
