Weapons

The use of weapons, both modern and traditional, is taught right from your very first lesson. Something else that makes Bujinkan Christchurch unique among the martial arts.
We feel it is our responsibility to teach you every aspect of the martial arts and not to teach the use of weapons would put you at a real disadvantage when confronted by a street attacker as they are more likely to be carrying a weapon of some kind than they are to be unarmed. On the streets of today's cities many attackers carry weapons like knives and so we train with this weapon, and many others so that we know that should the time come, we can deal effectively with whatever we are confronted with.
Unlike other martial arts we do not believe that training should be confined to unarmed defense techniques but must encompass all aspects of 21st century self defense and so weapon techniques, their use and the defense against them, are taught right from your very first les
son

Weapons we train in and use regularly include

  • Sword
  • Knife
  • Six Foot Staff
  • Three Foot Staff
  • Shuriken / Shuko
  • Other weapons we may use during the year can include:
  • Rope
  • Chain
  • Kyogetsu Shoge
  • Kama
  • Spear
  • Jutte

...and the list goes on and on. Basically if we can pick it up we can use it as a weapon.
The trick is to understand the principles that apply to all weapons use and then apply them to whatever you have at hand. We are the only martial arts system that has such a wide and varied weapons training syllabus and that makes us unique and, therefore, able to apply whatever we can pick up, and even some things we can't, to the defense of both ourselves an
d those near to us.

Training in martial arts that have a combat heritage not a sport background gives the practitioner the means necessary to defend themselves and the people they care about in an appropriate manner as and when needed. Over a thousand years of battle tested development lies behind the devastating techniques of Bujinkan Taijutsu as taught at Bujinkan Christchurch Dojo. While the effectiveness of the techniques is without doubt a major part of training the real secret lies in the unique approach to training, the structure of the classes and the atmosphere of relaxed enjoyment and positive enhancement of the students ability to perform the techniques under any conditions.
